Scholarships

Each year, the AIA Grand Valley Student Scholarship recognizes a deserving architectural student who has chosen to continue his/her professional architectural in a Baccalaureate degree in Architecture program or a Masters of Architecture Degree program education in a National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accredited program. The scholarship recognizes characteristics and qualities critical to achieving success in the architectural profession including academic competency, leadership potential, and appreciation of the built-environment.

SCHOLARSHIP AMOUNT:

The AIA Grand Valley Student Scholarship recipient(s) will be provided a $1000 scholarship to be applied to the cost of attending an architecture degree program including tuition, room and board, fees, books, and other educational-related expenses. The scholarship is for one year, but the applicant may apply for the scholarship in the following years.

CONDITIONS OF ELIGIBILITY:

To be considered for selection, the following criteria must be met:

  1. The applicant must be enrolled in a Baccalaureate degree in Architecture program or NAAB accredited Masters of Architecture Degree program
  2. The applicant must be a junior, senior, or master degree candidate with at least one year left to complete his/her architectural degree.
  3. The applicant must be a resident of West Michigan in the area encompassed by the AIA Grand Valley chapter.  This includes the counties of Ionia, Kent, Lake, Mason, Mecosta, Montcalm, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, Osceola, and Ottawa.
  4. The applicant should demonstrate enthusiasm and participation in areas of the built-environment. Participation in school activities or leadership roles in other organizations may be considered.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

The following procedure is required for consideration:

  1. Download the application and complete the biographical data section including extra-curricular activity involvement and employment history.
  2. Forward official transcript(s) from high school (optional) and all colleges/universities attended to: Gary Gerber, AIA / 6803 Blue Ridge NE / Belmont, MI 49306.
  3. Write an essay (1-3 double spaced, typed pages) explaining why you deserve to be an AIA Grand Valley Student Scholarship recipient, including long-term personal and career goals.
  4. Submit two academic/faculty references of your choice (in sealed envelope).
  5. Submit application, essay, references (3) to: Gary Gerber, AIA / 6803 Blue Ridge NE / Belmont, MI 49306.

The AIA Grand Valley Chapter Past President Committee and Gary Gerber, AIA, Continuing Education Director will select the scholarship recipient(s) from submitted applications.

AIA Grand Valley Student Scholarship Applications must be postmarked no later than March 14, 2012. Announcement of the winning recipient will be made no later than April 20, 2012.
